2 cm thick. Pine, spruce, larch, oak or acacia are best. The walls of the nesting box should be made of unplaned boards about 2\u20133 cm thick, as plywood and particleboard are not suitable for building nesting boxes because they soak up water and disintegrate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A nest box should be made of wood and not painted inside. A rough interior surface helps the chicks climb to the entrance hole. The outer walls can be lightly sanded for aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Structural elements<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Floor dimensions adapted to the species (example dimensions: 12\u00d712 cm for tits)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The roof of the kennel should project at least 3-4 cm beyond the front wall with the opening.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Front panel with high-set inlet opening<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Rear panel with mounting strip for fixing to tree trunks or walls<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nest box should have an opening side or roof, which allows for cleaning after the breeding season. This can be achieved using a hinge, a rotating nail, or easily removable screws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Inlet opening \u2013 why do a few millimetres make a difference?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The entrance hole in the nesting box should be placed as far as possible from the bottom of the box to prevent predators from accessing the brood, and its diameter should be adapted to the species of bird that will inhabit the box.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Recommended hole diameters:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>26-28 mm - blue tit, great tit, coal tit<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>32-34 mm \u2013 great tit, house sparrow, tree sparrow<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>45 mm and more \u2013 starling, jackdaw, larger species<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nest boxes for tits, such as blue tits and great tits, should have an entrance hole diameter of between 26 mm and 32 mm, and their height should be approximately 28 cm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The position of the hole matters for predator protection. The recommended distance from the bottom of the box is 18-22 cm. This prevents martens and cats from reaching the eggs or chicks with their paws through the entrance hole.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Do not mount a perch near the entrance hole. Birds do not need it, and it makes it easier for martens, cats and magpies to attack.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>How to protect a nesting box from the weather and predators<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The nesting box should be slightly tilted forward, with the roof pitch directed towards the front wall to shield the entrance hole from rain. The roof must be watertight, but not hermetic \u2013 small ventilation gaps under the roof ensure airflow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For external impregnation, use natural agents, e.g. linseed oil. Avoid paints with solvents and varnishes \u2013 the fumes can kill chicks. Avoid full southern sun exposure \u2013 the interior may overheat in summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nest boxes should be hung at a height of 2-3 metres to ensure the birds' safety from predators. In parks and forests, they can be mounted higher (3-5 m), and boxes for swifts and starlings on buildings \u2013 even 6-10 m above the ground.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The best time to hang nest boxes is in autumn, which allows birds to get used to the new object before the breeding season. Nest boxes are also used by birds in autumn and winter as shelter from the cold \u2013 this is an additional argument for early installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nest boxes should be prepared before the breeding season, by March 15th at the latest for small songbirds, to allow the birds to get used to them.
